Animated films have been around a lot longer than you would think; in fact J. Stuart Blackton (also known as The Father of American Animation) created the first animated film, ever – Humorous Phases of Funny Faces in 1906! Nineteen-oh-six! We’re fairly certain most of us haven’t ever seen the first animated film to ever grace humankind, so we did some digging (Honestly, it took 2 minutes), and found it. Here it is, in all its 1906 glory. Enjoy!

Fast forward many years and we arrive to the year 2020; a time where animation as an art, has jumped across mediums and the technology has far surpassed anything that was possible even 10 years ago. New age animation in the 21st century contain some of the best animated features ever created, and they’re only getting better.

Look how far we’ve come since the first Shrek (2001) movie, for example. Okay, that might have not been the best example, Shrek is timeless, Shrek is a classic, and still holds up VERY well against most animated features today (We REALLY like Shrek, in case that wasn’t already obvious).

So here we are, at OSN’s monthly pop-up channel, Get Animated from 14 to 29 February… home to the best animated features from the 21st century. You definitely do not want to miss all the animated awesomeness; this one is for all the kids and the kids at heart. Indulge in a world of fantasy and drama, love, music and wholesome happy endings.

Right, now back to this article’s namesake. TIME FOR THAT TOP 10 ROUND-UP! In no particular order, here is what you can expect on OSN Pop Up Get Animated:

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
Hiccup discovers that Toothless isn’t the only Night Fury, so he must journey on to find “The Hidden World” - a secret dragon utopia. But he must be quick, before a tyrant called Grimmel finds this utopia and wipes out all dragons entirely.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
One of THE coolest animated movies of the century, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was an instant hit. Audiences from around the world and critics alike could not stop praising this film, and everything about it. We have absolutely no complaints about this film being in our Top 10, and you shouldn’t either.

Ralph Breaks the Internet
This film, as its name suggest did end up breaking the internet. The sequel that no one expected to be successful, Ralph Breaks the Internet brings all the fun, laughs and emotion from the first movie and then turns it into an exciting new package. An absolutely splendid animated feature to enjoy with the entire family.

Secret Life of Pets
Ever wondered what your little pets are up to when you’re not at home? Yep, so have we (I wonder what my cats are up to right now, actually!). Join Max and Duke in an adventure of a lifetime in this seriously fun, totally awesome animated awesomeness!

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation
It’s the summer holidays, Dracula needs a break. So he hops on to a cruise where he meets Ericka, the captain of the ship. Ericka belongs to the family of Van Helsing; totally cool right? The Van Helsings want to destroy the entire monster race. Yikes!

Brave
One of the most beautifully animated movies you’re ever going to watch! Brave is a story of little girl named Merida, the archer, and the story of her breaking norms, customs and stereotypes to face forces far stronger than she can be. But that’s not going to stop her from trying.

Cars 1 & 2
Let’s call it like it is, Cars was WAY ahead of its time. We reckon people didn’t fully appreciate the film when it released, but this film and its sequel has gained popularity over time. These anthropomorphic vehicles came to “life” in 2006, and still hold up as an excellent animated feature today.

Finding Dory
AAAAAAH DORY OMG! Who doesn’t love Dory?! We could quite honestly write an entire blog dedicated to how amazing, brave and beautiful Dory is as an animated character in a movie about ‘fish’. Not a lot of people missed this movie when it released, but in case you haven’t watched it yet, you really REALLY should. Its 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is totally justified.

Shrek
As mentioned earlier on this blog, we totally love Shrek, and everything about it. So of course, Shrek made our Top 10 list. Shrek is a timeless new-age classic that goes so far beyond the normal realms of animated movies. It is the at the center of meme-culture, it’s ages so well, and is still absolutely hilarious to watch. A fun-filled family binge is definitely on the cards.
