True Detective Season 3: What To Expect

Season 3 of True Detective deserves more than an average 3-star rating….

But not everyone thinks so…

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the show; True Detective is an HBO special drama tv-series, which first premiered back in 2014.

Now, 5 years later, True Detective has gone into its third season – despite many viewers thinking it wouldn’t last, given the monotonous season 2.

So much so that it’s become a common thought amongst True Detective fans and if you ask anyone, the reciprocated answer would be something along the lines of: loved season 1, lost interest in season 2 and an alright season 3…so far.

But season 3 of True Detective truly deserves more than a mediocre 3-star rating.

Each season of True Detective follows a self-contained narrative and relies on different settings and characters – so essentially, you’re getting a whole new storyline each season!

The first season of True Detective stars man-hunk Mathew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts and Tory Kittles as the main character leads in the crime series – this might explain the high ratings for HBO and positive reviews.

And the rest of the story lines go something like this:

True Detective, season 1: Set in the state of Louisiana, two Police homicide detectives are on the pursuit to catching a serial killer over a 17-year time frame.

This season’s high chase and high stress-inducing altercations, not to mention a juicy yet simple narrative, is the reason behind the positive ratings of True Detective’s beginning.

True Detective, season 2: Invites Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly and Vince Vaughn and takes place in the state of California.

True Detective’s story line in season 2 focuses on three Police homicide detectives from three police departments as they solve a series of murders and crimes that are later found to be linked to a corrupt politician’s murder.

Fans may have connected less with the crime series in this season due to the complex narrative story – too many characters, too many plot twists and politics? Really?

So, with such a high rate of celebrity actors in all seasons of True Detective – why is the show not resonating high enough for viewers?

We’re going to break down what you will expect to see from True Detective season 3.

And we promise it’s worth giving the series a third chance…

True Detective, season 3 is making a comeback

In its third series, this HBO show is full of deep conversations, ideas, intersecting timelines and anxious environments, which is the best recipe for a crime series.

Remember when we said juicy, yet a simple narrative is the reason behind the success of season 1? Well it’s back just in time to salvage season 3.

Removing multiple characters and the hard-to-follow narration of the story, fans can expect a detective duo to return at the center of True Detective again with Stephen Dorff and Mahershala Ali playing detectives Roland West and Wayne Hays respectively.

The setting? Season 3 of True Detective is set in Arkansas and follows the investigation of the detective duo as they dive deep into the disappearance of two children last seen riding their bikes.

And perhaps a mere coincidence, however, season 3 follows 3 timelines:

Timeline 1: The missing Purcell children back in 1980.

Timeline 2: The review of the sentenced culprit in 1990 – with some indications that they might have locked up the wrong guy.

Timeline 3: And an older Wayne Hays with dementia in 2015 as the recollection of events unfold in an interview.

While True Detective tries hard to keep the pacing of the show afloat, we do see a weaker pacing by the second episode in season 3.

But don’t lose hope! It unfolds into gloomy and stifling atmospheres that will send chills down your spine as the storyline intersects between the 3 timelines.

While only a few episodes have been released of True Detective so far – it might be too early to see if season 3 is a hit or a miss, we’ll leave that for you to decide.
