The Oscars 2019 Milestones

The Oscars 2019 is a special one this year...

And for reasons that’ll have you thinking, “it’s about time.”

The Oscars 2019 nominees were announced almost a week ago with surprising and not so surprising nominations…The Favourite and Roma tied at the top with 10 Oscar nominations for Best Picture.

A Star Is Born followed suit with eight Oscar nominations and tied with Vice for the same.

But to our astonishment, Black Panther and BlacKkKlansman scored seven and six Oscar nominations each – a lot less than what the public was expecting.

Nevertheless, for several artists and titles, this year’s Oscars is a milestone – for some it’s about an unprecedented recognition and for others it’s a dream come true.

And that’s the case for Black Panther, Cold War, BlacKkKlansman and A Star Is Born, regardless of how many nominations they’ve received.

We can only imagine the general sentiment one achieves when they’re nominated for the Oscars, but we can also imagine that breaking an unprecedented move and making history tops the feeling just a tad.

So even though all titles, acting, directing, filming and editing efforts deserve to receive the nods of approval and appreciation applauses, there are several milestones at the Oscars 2019 that deserve all that and more for the following reasons...

Black Panther

Ranked as the third highest-growing film in the United States, Black Panther proved to be a success with fans all over the world too.

Black Panther’s seven Oscar nominations this year probably don’t do the movie justice because it represents more than just a superhero movie.

It’s one of the first superhero movies with a diverse cast of people of color – breaking the usual and unprecedented casts in the movie industry.

And not only was it nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars this year, Black Panther’s “All the Stars” soundtrack by Kendrick Lamar and SZA is also diversifying the Best Original Song nominees at the Academy Awards.

Lastly, if that wasn’t impressive enough, the production design by Hannah Beachler received a nomination for Best Production Design, which makes Beachler the first black production designer to be nominated for set category.

A first for many awards at the Oscars 2019, Black Panther is not just a superhero movie…it’s an important (and long overdue) recognition for community of color around the world.

BlacKkKlansman

Receiving six Oscar nominations at this year’s awards ceremony, BlacKkKlansman is the underdog of the Oscars…

Earning recognition in several categories, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Director, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay and Film Editing; we’ll have to watch to see if all that is enough for an Oscars award.

Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman earned him a nomination for an outstanding filmmaker for two nominations in the Adapted Screenplay category, which makes him the first black filmmaker to be recognized not once but twice in that same category.

Whether it’s a coincidence or not, Spike Lee’s 2019 recognition may be BlacKkKlansman, but his first recognition goes all the way back to 1989 with Do the Right Thing.

Despite these prestigious nominations, if Lee manages to nab the award for Best Director, he’ll be the first black filmmaker in history to win this category at the Oscars.

A Star Is Born

Also nominated for Best Picture this year with an impressive eight nominations, A Star Is Born is the story that many artists can relate to and even if you’re not an artist, you’ll enjoy the rawness found in this movie.

While fans were excited for Lady Gaga’s leading role in the movie alongside Bradley Cooper, they did not expect to see her earn so many nods and nominations at this year’s Oscars…because a singer has rarely done so before.

Lady Gaga became the second female singer to receive a nomination for Original Song titled “Shallow” AND acting nods for Actress in a Leading Role in A Star Is Born.

Following the footsteps of Mary J. Blige for her impressive singing and acting in the 2018 Mudbound movie – these women are breaking boundaries and paving the path for women in the film industry.

Cold War

While the Cold War was not nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars this year, it still nabbed three nods and is representing Poland’s history in a new light.

Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War, may have represented the cold war events in Poland solely in black-and-white but it still managed to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography and Best Director.

A first in history for Poland, Cold War is the first Foreign Film from the country to be nominated for the Oscars – and if it manages to steal the award from Capernaum, Never Look Away, Roma and Shoplifters, it’ll be the first Polish title to do so.
