Game of Thrones season 8 is coming!

And much like a Westerosi winter, our wait has gone on too long.

The good news is “the final season is taking a long time because it’s the biggest thing we’ve ever done,” according to Game of Thrones boss, David Benioff.

What we know so far is season 8 is the final season, will feature six extended episodes and premieres in April 2019.

So if like us, you’re missing the most popular TV series of all time and anxiously await its return, here are a few pressing questions and fan theories to keep you going.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!

Can Viserion be turned back into a living dragon?

Season 7 ended with the Night King breaching the wall on top of Viserion, now a White Walker dragon. Naturally in the war of White Walkers vs humans, this development is a crushing blow to the humans, leaving fans wondering if there’s a chance Viserion can be brought back to life. While it seems unlikely, if it does happen here’s a possible theory. As a White Walker, or Wight, Viserion is no longer a living creature, he is from the risen dead and is under another being’s control. The only way to kill Viserion now, is to burn him or kill the Night King, because when a White Walker dies all the Wights they turned also return to being dead. But that still doesn’t bring Viserion back to life....

FAN THEORY: Enter Melisandre, aka Red Woman. Before leaving Dragonstone, Melisandre told Varys she would return to Westeros one more time to die. So perhaps her last mission will be to return during the Great War to bring Viserion back to life and under Daenery’s command, at the cost of her own life.

Is Tyrion a Targaryen or will he betray Daenerys for Cersei?

Tyrion Lannister’s role in the Great War is at a major crossroads as season 7 comes to an end. On the one hand there’s a theory that Tyrion is actually a Targaryen based on the A + J = T theory. The theory stems from the fact that the Mad King Aery was obsessed with Joanna, Tywin Lannister’s wife, and could have impregnated her with Tyrion, meaning he is a Targaryen. This theory could very well explain why Tywin Lannister always hated him and even told him “you’re no son of mine” before he died. It could also explain why the dragons remained calm around Tyrion, similar to Jon Snow. On the other hand, there’s talk of Tyrion making a deal with Cersei to betray Daenerys. During Tyrion’s meeting with Cersei, when he was trying to convince her to work with Daenerys and Jon, Tyrion noticed she was pregnant. After his realization, the scene immediately cuts back to the Dragonpit and we did not see the conversation between Tyrion and Cersei....

FAN THEORY: Perhaps he convinced her to work with them by promising to protect her unborn child and ensure the child will be Daenerys only heir to the Iron Throne, believing the Mother of Dragons cannot have children. But based on the look of concern on Tyrion’s face when he overheard Jon and Dany’s steamy session, we’re thinking there’s more to the story, which brings us to our next question…..

Will Daenerys get pregnant with Jon Snow’s baby?

Throughout season 7 we're continuously reminded of the fact that Daenerys is infertile. We see Tyrion questioning her about who will succeed her, and when Viserion dies she explains to Jon that the dragons are the only children she will have, a belief she has had since she lost her baby in season 1. Late in her pregnancy, Dany’s husband Khal Drogo is fatally injured, blood magic practitioner, Mirri Maz Duur, convinces her that the only way to save his life is with a blood sacrifice saying, “only death can pay for life.” It turns out Mirri was seeking revenge against Daenerys and her magic causes Dany’s baby to be still born while Khal to remain in a vegetative state. When Dany askes the blood magic witch, when he will return to her, she replies: “When the sun rises in the west, sets in the east. When the seas go dry. When the mountains blow in the wind like leaves” and as written in the books “when your womb quickens again and you bear a living child, then he will return, and not before." Because of this, Dany believes she is barren....

FAN THEORY: Referencing various quotes in the show, one theory asks if Viserion’s death could pay for the life of a new baby. Another suggests Melisandre’s comment on her job being done because she has brought ice (Jon) and fire (Dany) together, leading fans to speculate that the union of ice and fire could create a baby mixed with both. Or what about Azor Ahai, the prince that was promised, if it turns out to be Jon then this prince can allegedly “wake dragons from stone”, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for bringing life to Dany’s barren womb.

Who is Azor Ahai aka the prince that was promised?

Incase you didn’t know pretty much everything depends on the identity of Azor Ahai. Legend has it that an ancient hero will be reborn and take up the great Lightbringer sword to defeat the White Walkers. The prophecy states: “when the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone.” There have been a few characters linked to being the prince that was promised, like when Melisandre was convinced it was Stannis Baratheon, but turned out to be wrong. The front-runners are Dany based on the theory that she literally woke dragons out of stone when she hatched the three dragons. Plus the fact that we were specifically told that the word prince has no gender in ancient Valyrian, perhaps to prepare us for what’s to come? The legend also states that Azor is somebody who is connected to ice and fire, pointing to another front-runner, Jon Snow, who as we know is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen (fire) and Lyanna Stark (ice). Another contender is Tyrion Lannister, who as we’ve already told you is rumored to be the Mad King’s son, meaning he fulfills the prophecy that Azor is a descendant of Aerys II.

Is Gendry the rightful heir to the throne?

While most fans think Gendry could be Robert Baratheon’s bastard child, some actually have a theory that he is the child of Robert and Cersei Baratheon...

FAN THEORY: The theory comes from Cersei’s conversation with Caitlyn Stark back in season 1, when Cersei mentioned that her first child was a “black-haired beauty” who died but she never visited his body. The next scene cuts to Gendry, sparking the theory that there may be a connection. Another piece of evidence used to support this theory is, Gendry telling Arya that all he can remember about his mother is she had “yellow hair”. If Gendry is Robert and Cersei’s child then technically he is a legitimate heir to the Iron Throne.

Will Jaime kill Cersei?

There’s a lot of questions surrounding the fate of Cersei Lannister, the reigning queen of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. As a child, Cersei received a prophecy that she will marry a king, become a queen, have three children, watch them all die, and die at the hands of the valonqar, meaning little brother in Valyrian. As we’ve seen Cersei has become more and more ruthless, some would even say mad and all things point towards the demise of the Mad Queen....

FAN THEORY: While we can’t rule out Tyrion just yet, fans seem sure that in fact her twin brother/ lover (gross, we know!), Jaime Lannister, will be the one to kill her, just like he put an end to the reign of the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen.

Or will Arya Stark use Jaime's face to kill Cersei?

It would techinically fulfill the prophecy and also allow Arya to tick Cersei off her kill list

Is Bran Stark is the Night King?

Although the actor that plays Bran Stark coyly denied this theory, fans insist that he is in fact the Night King. The theory has been floating around on fan sites for a while now and is based on anything from similarities in clothing to the fact that they have the same facial features.

FAN THEORY: One major theory is that Bran as the Three-Eyed Raven warged back in time into the man the Children of the Forest turn into the Night King, aka the first ever White Walker, and somehow got stuck there.
