The Oscars 2019: Winners Take Home the Gold

February 27, 2019

As the chapter to the Oscars 2019 closes this year…

We bid farewell to all the anticipation, excitement and surprise that was built up until the last second of the 91st Awards Ceremony.

With many of us placing guesses and rooting for our favorite actors, actresses and movie titles…we can’t deny that all the Oscar winners deserve the gold statuette, because the nominees were outstanding in their own way this year.

And now the Oscars has come and gone, but this isn’t a goodbye…just a see ya next year.

Until then, you’ll find us binge-watching all the Oscar hits and wins from the comfort of our couch with lots of snacks around…. obviously.

Because there’s no other way to celebrate the fantastic work put in by the Oscar 2019 winners this year than by watching them on the screen doing what they do best!

However, there’s one reason why the Oscars is special this year and its all thanks to Rami Malek, who made history at the Awards ceremony and is a reminder that we are all capable of achieving our dreams, no matter what background we come from.

Without further ado, let’s celebrate the winners together as we bring you the top titles from the big screen to your screen.

Leading Actor

Winner: Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody

Rami Malek’s outstanding performance in Bohemian Rhapsody will be talked about and remembered till the end of time.

Portraying the life of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer in British Rock Band, Queen, and his struggle to achieve independence, fame and self-acceptance.

The life of the extraordinary queer singer was beautifully portrayed by Rami Malek, showcasing the good, the bad, the struggles, the achievements and the smooth sounding hits that shaped the lives of outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.

And what makes it even more special, is that Rami Malek, a first generation Egyptian-American took home the Leading Actor Oscar award.

While Freddie Mercury broke records years ago as being a queer refugee who went on to make music history, it’s a beautiful coincidence to have Rami Malek break the record for Arab outsiders to pursue their dreams.

"We made a film about a [queer] man, an immigrant, who lived his life just unapologetically himself, and the fact that I'm celebrating him and this story with you tonight is proof that we're longing for stories like this,” he said while accepting his award.

"I am the son of immigrants from Egypt. I'm a first-generation American, and part of my story is being written right now.”

Leading Actress

Winner: Olivia Colman in The Favourite

Olivia-colman_oscars-2019.jpeg

Olivia Colman’s performance in The Favourite was extremely powerful in her attempts to depict a rather unusual twist of England’s Queen Anne.

While the British and the French are at war, the Queen’s frail condition leaves her making all sorts of complex decision, including leaving England’s fate to her best friend, Lady Sarah.

And with all this chaos around, Olivia Colman portrays the life of Queen Anne who is caught up in a love triangle between Abigal, a new servant in her kingdom, and Lady Sarah.

Critics have long declined this rendition of Queen Anne’s life and deny her involvement in a femme love triangle – but whether the story is based on facts or not, Olivia’s performance had us seated at the edge of our seat believing every word and scenario.

Olivia Colman's acceptance speech might have been on the funnier side, leaving stars in the audience giggling and laughing throughout, a liner from the speech when she said “to be in this category with these extraordinary women, [including] Glenn Close, you’ve been my idol for so long…”

And she was right, this year’s leading Actress category had very strong female contenders and it’s a great step to pave the way for women in the film industry.

Best Picture

Winner: Green Book

While Green Book only had 5 Oscar nominations, the movie signifies more than just those numbers.

Portraying the South in America circa 1960, Green Book presents the story of an African-American classical pianist who befriends and is driven around by an Italian-American chauffeur.

An unusual scenario for the American South in the ‘60s, where other stories including Driving Miss Daisy had a complete opposite story line – an elderly Southern matron being driven around by an African-American driver.

Such was the repeated plot of many stories from the 60’s, but this time “they changed the seating arrangement!” as said by Spike Lee, director of BlacKkKlansman.

Mahersala Ali, who also won an Oscar for best supporting actor in his role in Green Book, could not have done a better job at leading the film to success.

As Jim Burke, Charles B. Wessler, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly and Nick Vallelonga took to the stage with the entire cast, they shared a few beautiful points about what Green Book stands for.

“We made this film with love and we made it with tenderness and we made it with respect. The whole story is about love, it’s about loving each other despite our differences and finding out the truth about who we are – we are the same people.”
